Recently I have been popping out of the cat flap for a little longer than usual at night because I have been catching  up with an old friend.  I generally only share my garden with my family.  If I catch anybody else wandering through it uninvited, I generally let them have it and they skidaddle pretty quickly.

I first met Harry a couple of years ago when he took me by surprise. I popped out of the cat flap and there he was eating a slug right outside my back door.  I didn’t know exactly who he was and I wasn’t very pleased to find him there, so I barked at him and instead of running away from me, the big, scary Shorkie, he curled up into a ball.  So I started to prod him with my paws, which is something I will never do again.  Ouch Mr Spiky!

Harry only pops out of his nest at night and he considers himself to be the Gardener’s Friend as he eats all the bugs, slugs and snails that people try to kill will with chemicals.  So he is a good guy to have around and someone I like to spend time with when he drops by.

HEDGEHOG EATING A SLUG
Harry’s favourite meal … a slug … yum

Yes, it is true that hedgehogs have fleas but their fleas only like hedgehogs.  So you don’t have to worry about any of your furry friends.

For all you need to know about Harry go to the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group or the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
